We
run daily kayak tours
year around out
of Victoria for groups as small as two and as large as 12. While touring
is our
main
interest, we also organize tours and provide necessary equipment to
experienced paddlers (our 'self-guided' tours)..
There are a wide range of kayaking adventures close
to Victoria. Our advantage is that
our operation is entirely mobile: we trailer our kayaks to over 6 diverse
locations around Victoria and the south Island- to whatever kayaking area suits your fancy
and experience...
Note
that previous experience is not a requirement for many of our tours. We
provide basic instruction and guidance. Note that family
and group rates can be provided.
Our
most popular paddles around Victoria are listed below
1)
Todd & Saanich Inlet (3 hours).
Our departure point
is Brentwood Marina, close to the world famous Butchart Gard
ens
and a half hour drive from Victoria. Saanich Inlet is a beautiful fjord,
characterized by extremely deep waters, flanked by steep mountain slopes
on both sides. Much of the shoreline along the upper reaches of this
inlet is thickly forested park land; wild and pristine - prime habitat
for eagles. These waters are noted for their safe and sheltered paddling
conditions the year around. We can stop over for lunch on an idylic island.
This
fjord is recognized by scientists as a unique biological laboratory
harbouring such exotic species as the world's larges octopus (only four
other inlets in the world share conditions like it). For an added treat,
the upper reaches of Saanich Inlet, where we will be paddling,
feature waters warm enough during the summer for comfortable swimming
- unusual for salt water along our coast! After your tour,
you can be dropped off at the Butchart Gardens or a funky seaside eatery
adjacent our haul out.
Cost
is $85. plus tax. (4 hours) and $100. (from 5 to 6 hours). If combined with our Sea to sky tour , our 2.5 hour tour is $50.
2)
Fisgard Lighthouse and the Seal Islands
(3 hours).
We depart from th
e
Songhees First Nations Reserve (10 minutes from downtown Victoria) and
set off across tranquil Esquimalt Harbour. Enroute we catch a glimpse
of Canada's navy ships stationed in these protected waters. Tour highlights
include a visit to Cole Island, an Osprey nest, and the seal rookeries
of the Brothers islands off the mouth of the harbour.
Often
there are dolphins frequenting the mouth of the harbour. We beach our
kayaks at Fort Rodd Hill, where we go ashore to stretch our legs, have
a snack and explore this massive defensive installation, now a National
Historic Site maintained by Parks Canada. The tour of Fisgard Lighthouse,
now a working museum adjacent this fort (shown above), is
one of the highlights of this tour.
Cost is $80. plus tax If a stopover at Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse
is desired the cost is
an extra $5. per person (allow an extra 45 minutes for this stopover)
3) Oak Bay and the Islands. this is our nmost popular tour: We begin at Oak Bay Marina,
a 15
minute
scenic drive from downtown Victoria. There are three options:
Option 1) Paddling the shoreline and islands around Oak Bay and Cadboro Bay. These allow us to view seals and many sea birds. this tour is suited for beginners (3 hours). Cost is $70. plus tax
Option 2 ) Paddling out to the Chain Islands - a marine reserve whose protected
waters feature a wide
array of marine life and sea life. Because of the open water crossing this tour is better suited to those with paddling experience (3 hours). Cost is $70. plus tax
Option 3) Paddling the Chain & Chatham islands - our best - if not most challenging paddle. This "island-hop
ping" tour combines a bit of everything: from wildlife viewing to picnicking on the beach to hiking some of the most wild and beautiful islands and beaches on the BC Coast. You will enjoy the hike to the Lighthouse on Discovery and especialy the view from Pandora Hill (on a clear day you can see both Mount Baker and Mount Rainier). This tour is 6-7 hours in duration and is restricted to experienced paddlers (it is also restricted to times of slack water as the currents in crossing over to these islands can make the going difficult).
Cost is $115. plus tax. Adults and $95. Children under 16.
4)
Combination Whale Watching & Kayaking Adventure (7
hours).
This tour combines either Option 1 or 2 described above with a whale watching tour in a whale watching vessel (shown below). The kayaking is usually done in the morning and the whale watching in the afternoon. You have a choice of combining both activities on the same day or doing them on separate days. You also have the choice of being dropped off after whale watching at Oak Bay or the Inner Harbour (Fisherman's Wharf).
The
Cost of our Combination Kayak and Whale Watching tour is $150. Can.
for adults and $120. for Youth & Children under 16 (includes
all equipment, vessels, and transfers to the vessel).
